Pura Belpré arrived in New York City in 1921 and found a need to connect the increasing Hispanic communities over the town’s boroughs. As one of the very first bilingual assistants employed through the Big apple General public Library, Belpré uncovered fertile floor for bilingual cuentos folklóricos (folkloric tales) from her indigenous Puerto
